Base/ Plinth Commision
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:52:31 pm »
Ello,
Here's something I'm currently working on. Designing away bases and plinths for my second potential client (waiting on his approval before I can progress). Loads of variations could be done.
Production very lightly started. Mapping out, setting tools (and making), and documenting (each work I do usually has a write up of notes and likes.
General specs; W30-60mm, H23ish mm, Circular.

Hope you like;

Dusty

Hey guys,
Waiting on putty and I realized I could add the other base project I've done. Again for display purposes.

Here's the frame/surround. It can be hung on a hook if not required or used to group the circular bases together. You'll see the applications as we go on;

Plain inserts;

And then, Haazar;

Rotated to face each other (Ryu Vs Ken)

One plain insert, one plinth insert;

Btw there's a magnet in the surround, that small step thing between the holes and two in the sorta 'title' block opposite.

Here's where it gets more interesting;

And if you piss off this old Hero Quest guy, he does this;

Actually I got the flame inserts in the spraybooth ready to be done up soon.
I refer to this circular group display thing as a 2-Up version (2 holes), I've got a 3-Up too. I'll post it up in a little while, gonna have a break first.
Cya,
Dusty
btw, Vorro - I'm getting production started, gonna take awhile, but sure - anyone want any of those or variations, tweeks, etc, let me know and I can draw some new ones up (I could already do another 4 pages probably and that's just playing with circles, Weee round n' round we go, lol). Or post up your designs, specs, dimensions etc.

Damn hungry again...
Here's the 3-Up (barricade style);

Bit of a jumble to see what's there exactly - tank stops, barbed wire, barrels, couple of guns, sandbags, bullets, ammo boxes, binoculars, er....semi-flex flagpoles.

Jeez a lot of pics...

Ahhh, I'm blind!! Sorry for the spamming but you guys like pics right!
Side notes: Er..Sandbags. Some are Tamiya kit, couple melted slightly to bend into position, the rest putty. Actually prefer the putty version (more in scale & detail and positions far better). Wish I'd done that from the start. The barbed wire has stabbed me numerous times, so there might be a few blood spots here or there - woops. It also ruins brushes quick or they get tangled in them - doing they're job I suppose!
Okie Dokie, hope you found that insightful.
Later dudes & dudettes,
Dusty

Hello  chaplin
Getting back to the commissioned build.
So here's the start of production, roughly shaped for now. Can be stack to create as big a plinth as you like. Each layer (5mm) can also be flipped giving even more possibles. I'm working on some inbetween sizes to merge them more. At some point, I'll mold them and get it all packaged. If anyone has any designs they want done etc feel free to ask.

Right, back to volley ball trainning,
Dusty
Question:Is there a way to subscribe to threads so I don't have to rummage across the boards? I can never find my marbles easily to update. Cheers

Hi guys,
Sorry it's been quite a while. Been creating even more styles/variations/sizes and smoothing out everything. I know I left this topic static for a while - again apologies. But I have been working like a dog over it, getting frustrated going for perfection (in the end went laser guided). Alas I haven't taken any new pics as again just concentrating on getting it done.
But as far as update goes;
Made some molds, however my oven bubbled them (too hot). So I'm gonna have to do them again (at the same time the newer ones as well). So casting hopefully in 2 days time - Prep the mold tomorrow. 3rd day hopefully clean up the casts, take pics and upload. 4th day assemble to people's likings and upload pics. 5th day organize packing them. If all goes well, by Monday I should be able to dispatch. Well that's the idea/plan.
Vorro - 20cm is a bit big for my grind-spinner to handle. I'll still try to do it for you, but I think the 20cm diameter would be the footprint size - platform size would be less. Hope that would be ok. What sorta height would you like?
Dang, I wish I had instant pics to show cause I've actually got name plaques on a couple of them, and working on making some so you can slide in your own name/design. Ok after saying that - I better get the camera out promto.
All the best,
Dusty

Hi guys,
Quick update - Molding/casting underway. Cleaning/sanding/checking casts. Not yet put any together tho, building stock and then the combinations can go wild. I've taken wip pics but not yet processed them. Perhaps late tonight/tomorrow I'll upload them. Just remembered I got a doctors appointment tomorrow - shouldn't be a biggy.
Still need to do some 'Toppers' (top layer), got carried away with making the main body of them.
Vorro - Still need to get onto it. I'm probably not gonna mold that one due to it's size, so I think it'll be a one off. Sorry for the delay on yours Vorro, but I'll give it something special like a name plaque if you like. If so, lemme know what you want it to say or send me an image or something.
Insomniac - I've taken some pics of that fella for ya. He's an old wip. He's actually holding a twin autocannon. But I'll upload it all together woth the plinths.
Cheers,
Dusty

Good evening/morning/twilight/dawn/dusk - what day is it?
Ok Been a heck-of-a-long day so please forgive any confusingness.
That Hospital appointment was dragged out. They gave me some different insulin  to try (Not sure if I told you guys I'm a diabetic). Most of today has been chores unfortunately. However I did knuckle down with what I'm about to show you. Now I know thery're not labelled, but each disc has been stamped and I'm up to letter 'V' so far. I'll have to work out/do another page-spread that shows each one more clearly and identified.
The sanding/cleaning is taking longer than I expected and as casts are done in batches - there's loads to clean up. So again please forgive any rough areas in the pics - I'll sort them out in due time.
At least I'm now at a point where I can play around with the combinations. I was having a huge headache calibrating my tools and my eyes. Anyway on to pics..... Wo0t

I hope the name plaque is clear enough to see. It's been masked in the middle covering a name behind clear plastic. So unfortunately it'll have to remain until the thing is painted. But by next pic-post you should hopefully see it in all/most of it's glory. Btw I gave them a bathroom speckley finish (optional).
Vorro - I've got no idea what you meant by
something old worldy with like 'Archeon, the Lord of the End Times' or something like that.

Is that what you want it to say 'Archeon, the Lord of the End Times'? I said 'name plaque' not a 'prayer-plaque'. But that's what you want..ok ?) And 'old worldy'?
I guess that's about it for now. Oh still making even more on the side, calling them 'wrap-arounds' and 'common-shapes (where particular discs suit each other like 'B' and 'C')'. Also you'll be pleased to know that these plinths can easily (in theory) be made into pillars, and again combinations ahoy. Jeez what have I created?
All the best,
Dusty
Ps. Is there a way to subcribe to topics so I can find them easier to update?

Hi guys,
Sorry it's been a while. Here's the update:

As you can see, you can display more than models - 101 uses! There's a name wrap-round I had to blur out incase it offended other forums I post on, but you guys can guess what it says! And I thought I'd include the NightPigeon commission (2 birds, 1 stone lol)

Here's Vorro's 20cm biggie. It's currently in 2 parts, about 3cm high together. These models are well old now, but at least you get to see my old skool painting!

All the best,
Dusty

Howdy,
Long story. Basically I never stopped working on these. New materials/tools/designs/mentality, remoulded and new casts. Before I was having nightmare problems with airbubbles and things coming out skew (sloping) and I wasn't planning on sanding every one 90 degree flat or fill in all the holes. Sorry for the long wait and Vorro I haven't forgotton about you at all mate. Although I still haven't moulded the large 20cm plinth, I'll be sending you a set of what I've currently got. Just hope people find them versatile and not riddled with airbubbles. Some of the moulds are unique to avoid the undercuts and avoid having the mould line vertically slice through the plinth (making it harder to remove from undercut areas later). However this method is what has been giving me such air problems as it's a bit 'hit &miss'.
Anyway here they are!

RC Plinth 60cm:

Flip (F)Plinth 55cm:

Large Plinth 90cm:

Their uses are growing. And being flipable, twice the fun!
Got enough plinths here to cover a terrain board probably. Maybe I'll stack them all up and make Plinth Mountain and see how tall it is.

Combinations (note which are used and which way round to give you a sense of variations):

Now for a little additional attachment:

And this will keep me safe from Ladydust's new trooper:

All the best,
Dusty
